Exhibiting at the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival

Happy Monday!

Today, I've got some fun news to share!
I've just found out I'll be exhibiting at this year's Vancouver Comic Arts' Festival. I've never done one of these before, so I'm very excited. And maybe a little nervous too. But let's see what happens!

It will be taking place May 21st and 22nd; Sat. 10am-6pm Sun. 11am-5pm at 181 Roundhouse Mews Vancouver, BC.

"The Vancouver Comic Arts Festival is a weekend-long celebration of comics that enjoyed its launch in May 2012. The festival features readings, panels, and workshops, culminating in a two-day exhibition for cartoonists from across the country and down the coast.

VanCAF is meant for everyone, whether they’re comic professionals, die-hard fans, or casual readers. For this reason, admission to all events is completely free, and participating fees for exhibitors are kept as low as possible. The festival seeks to support Vancouver comics, encouraging local creators and stories." (via 'about' page)

Art Week Sneak Peeks

Hi there!

So the past week has been fairly interesting.

Overseas, from July 30th to August 3rd, the Mail Me Art - Short & Sweet exhibition went up at the Framers Gallery. And the second show at the Factoryroad Gallery is happening this week from August 8th to the 12th. If you're in the UK area - go check it out.

Anyhow, I really wish I could have been there, but hopefully I'll get to go to England soon enough, possibly even for the Mail Me Art 4 show which I'm going to participate in.

Meanwhile, back in Vancouver, from August 1st - 4th I was with the Rain City Illustration Club at the Yellow Crane Festival enjoying all kinds of weather and selling artwork from our club members.

Our club calendar!

On the second day it started to rain and puddles began to appear by our tents. Quite a few people wouldn't notice them and step in them, to their surprise. So, Pandora had the brilliant idea of getting rubber ducks and letting them swim in the puddles - to warn people of the growing lakes happening all around.

It worked! Stepping in the puddle was avoided!

On the contrary - as effective as the ducks were at keeping the adults' feet dry, they drew in twice as many children to jump in and get wet. For the rest of the festival days the ducks were a hit with the little ones. (And they were also immensely popular with the photo loving ladies and gents)

During the slow hours some of us sketched. I drew a little something everyday. Here's my favourite drawing:

Overall, the festival was a fun experience. It was great to talk to some nice people from out of town and from the area and tell them about our club. I sold quite a few cards so that was exciting as well. Not sure if we'll set up shot at the next year's festival but we've definitely learned lots and we'll hopefully be looking into representing the club at other arts & crafts events.

Michel and I after the last day of the festival managed to ambush Stephen Silver after his Schoolism workshop and got him to sign our sketchbooks! He was very nice about it too :)

On a final note, I've been working on some of my own fun, pattern inspired art and crafts projects and I'm eager to open an Etsy shop sometime at the end of the week. I'm off editing product photos as soon as I finish this post! Here's a preview of my merchandise below. I also have patterned canvases, lino-cut prints, and more in the works!

Postcard Parade!

Hi!

Fine, maybe not "parade" per se, but there will be a festival and there will be postcards for purchase.

Next week, starting on Thursday August 1st the Yellow Crane Festival of Art & Design will be rolling out tables on Granville Island, Vancouver for their annual summer celebration of Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s diverse and talented students and alumni!

The festival is free to attend and it will be on 11am to 4pm daily, from August 1st to the 4th.
I'll be there with some friends, representing the Rain City Illustration Club of the university and selling cards, illustration prints, screen prints, original artwork, calendars, and even skateboard decks (I think). It should be a really great atmosphere with live music, prize raffles, laughter, art, and ice-cream all around. So to everyone in Vancouver - please stop by to at least have a look! =)

What I'm contributing are some prints and postcards that I've recently had printed. I'll have 5 of each of these up for grabs - all nicely packaged in crystal clear bags with a cardboard backing:

The postcards I've ordered from Moo.com and they turned out wonderful and they arrived much quicker than the estimated date, only about a week after I ordered them actually. I'm always worried about colour and contrast accuracy when I order anything, but there was nothing to fear as these came out pretty close to precisely what I saw on my screen. Yay Moo! I'm not getting promote them, I'm just delighted when I get what I ask for. Anyhow, here are the cards:
