Forests of Mayne

This Easter long weekend my friends and I left the city behind and escaped to Mayne Island (British Columbia). Faced with the beautiful scenery of the lush forest I couldn't help but take some photos and now share them here. :)

Tea With One's Former Self

Last illustration assignment: Self-portrait in any media/any style

So this is kind of a "double" self portrait illustration -- of me having tea with my younger self. Back in the day I used to dump lots of sugar in my tea, where as now I don't because I'm more healthy:)

Again, just something playful and humorous:)

Waterproof colored inks (and a little of white gouache) on Bristol Smooth Paper

Art School Comics

Here is the assignment for our Illustration: Narrative Structures class, which is basically a class where we learn and draw comics. We had 3 comic assignments this semester - and the one below is a group project where we were to tell a story, or a few, about our Art School/Emily Carr University experiences. An assignment inspired by the Art School Confidential comic by Daniel Clowes.

So this is ours:

Pencils: by Jori
Inks: by Caitlin
Colouring/lettering/editing: Me (Mariya) :)
*Coloured in Photoshop

Pastel Proprieties

Here is an assignment for my Illustration Essentials class which came before the lino-cut one.

We had to do another self portrait, but this time use chalk pastels.

For mine I used: Koh-I-Noor chalk pastels + conte pencils + cream pastel paper

Again, it's not a physically realistic portrait of myself, but more of personality portraying kind. I portrayed myself as a character that could be found in a Jane Austen novel:)
Tea, pastries anyone?

Lino-Cut Lady

Latest assignment for my Illustration Essentials class. Creating a self portrait using a lino-cut print.
Here is what I ended up with. Inspired again by Art Nouveau prints.
At first I left it with a violet background:

4 x 6''
Then I decided I wanted a white background:

4 x 6''
And then I wanted to see what it would look like if I tried to embrace the texture that cutting to the white created:

4 x 6''

So yeah, not really a particular likeness to me, but I wasn't really going for that. I guess it's more of a spiritual/personality portrait, haha. This was pretty fun:)
